Fog effect machines follow two basic principles: heated or chilled. Heated fog machine systems use inert gas or an electric pump to deliver mineral oil or glycol-based “fog juice” into a heat exchanger, where it is vaporized. Chilled fog effect machines use dry ice to create thick clouds that hang around close to the ground and dissipate as they rise. This is in contrast to Koolfog, which delivers a pure water, high-pressure fog system that, in part, creates the same results but with no consumables and the capability to cover very large spaces. After fog effect machines first came onto the market, many studies were conducted to test the possible adverse effects of exposure to dry ice, glycol-based substances, and liquid nitrogen. Medical institutions such as the Mount Sinai School of Medicine found that even short-term exposure to glycol-based (otherwise known as “fog juice”) substances can cause acute dizziness, fatigue, and headaches, as well as slight levels of anoxia (lack of oxygenation). Tightening air regulations is sometimes driving the replacement of fog effect machines with high-pressure pure water fog systems.
